in line
Describing equipment, components, or fluid systems that are positioned within the main flow stream of a pipeline or wellbore rather than in a bypass or side pocket; in-line equipment is exposed to the full flow of produced fluids.
in situ
Definition coming soon.
in situ combustion
An enhanced oil recovery method in which air or oxygen is injected into the reservoir to ignite and sustain combustion of a portion of the oil in place, generating heat and displacing additional oil toward production wells; also called fireflooding.
in situ fluid analysis
The measurement and characterization of formation fluids while still in the reservoir using downhole tools deployed on wireline or LWD systems, obtaining representative fluid samples and properties before contamination or pressure changes occur during production.
in situ viscosity evaluation
The determination of reservoir fluid viscosity under actual in-situ conditions of temperature and pressure using downhole measurement tools, providing more accurate data than surface measurements subject to phase changes and pressure reduction.
in-line

in-situ
Referring to conditions, measurements, or processes occurring in the original underground location; in-situ measurements record formation properties such as temperature, pressure, stress, and fluid composition under actual reservoir conditions.

incident angle
The angle between an incoming seismic wave ray path and the normal (perpendicular) to the reflecting surface; incident angle affects reflection and refraction behavior according to Snell's law and influences AVO (amplitude versus offset) analysis.

indicator
In well logging and reservoir evaluation, an indicator is a measurement or parameter used as a proxy or qualitative signal for a specific property such as hydrocarbon presence, formation lithology, or fluid type when direct measurement is not available.

inert sulfide
A form of iron sulfide (FeS) that does not react with oxygen under normal conditions, formed in sour gas environments; inert sulfide scale in wellbores and surface equipment can reduce flow efficiency but poses less immediate safety risk than pyrophoric iron sulfide.
inertial resistance

infinite acting radial flow
A flow regime during a pressure transient test in which the pressure disturbance has not yet reached any reservoir boundary, so the reservoir behaves as if it were infinite in extent; identified by a straight line on a semi-log pressure vs. time plot.
infinite acting reservoir
A reservoir that is large enough relative to the duration of a pressure transient test that boundary effects are not detected; well test analysis assumes infinite acting behavior during the transient flow period to determine permeability and skin factor.
infinite conductivity fracture
A hydraulic fracture in which the conductivity (permeability times width) is so high relative to the formation permeability that there is essentially no pressure drop along the fracture length, allowing fluid to flow freely from the formation into the wellbore.

inhibition
The process of preventing or reducing corrosion, scale, hydrate formation, or other damaging mechanisms in wellbores, pipelines, and surface equipment through the addition of chemical inhibitors or modification of operating conditions.
